In the official gameplay showcase, she is encountered inside a splendid cathedral in Svartrau, ornamented with paintings, stained glass, and tapestries. Coen is there investigating a clue hidden among the ceiling frescoes — frescoes that Brencis has ordered darkened.

Where and When You Fight Xanthe

The encounter happens at night, in Svartrau's cathedral, during the showcase's quest for a legendary sword hidden in the city's crypts. Coen reaches the building by using Planeshift to scale the walls and slipping inside through an opening.

Because it is night, this is a vampire-form fight. The runic scars that channel Coen's daytime magic seal themselves after sunset, so his spellbook is unavailable — you fight with claws and instinctive vampiric power instead. The developers stress that even as a mythical creature of the night, combat remains immersive and realistic: stay alert or die.

Xanthe is not alone when he arrives. She is escorted by blood guards — humans contaminated with vampire blood and bound into service. The conversation with this formidable vampire can be handled in several ways, the developers note. On the showcased night, however, the only resolution was violence.

Phase 0: The Blood Guards

Before Xanthe considers Coen a worthy challenge, you must defeat her escort of three blood guards. These are not ordinary humans: they dual-wield their weapons and are stronger than normal men.

Phase 1: Blood Whips

Xanthe opens with her blood control powers, hurling a multitude of attacks — most notably her blood whips, which strike Coen from left and right. Do not stand still. Keep moving, read attack directions, and remember that claw combat follows the same directional principles as swordplay.

Phase 2: The Protected State

Xanthe is protected by a powerful vampiric ability. While it holds, your hits accomplish little. Your real target is her stamina: once it is depleted, Coen gets his chance to strike and deal actual damage. Treat this phase as a war of attrition.

Phase 3: The Counterattack Window

When her protection breaks, a damage window opens — but it is short. Xanthe is quick to counterattack, so punish her recovery and get out again. Greedy players eat whips.

Phase 4: Interrupt Her Blood Restoration

Yes — and this is official. The developers have demonstrated the battle as one that can be won even at the start of the game, calling it the perfect challenge for a hardcore player. In the showcase itself, the fight proved too much for Coen, and his end came early.
