Dawnwalker Beginner Guide: What To Do First

Updated 8 min read

This guide draws on official information from Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco for The Blood of Dawnwalker (released September 3, 2026). Sections marked as unconfirmed reflect details that are not yet officially verified.

The beginner trap in The Blood of Dawnwalker is not that fights are too hard. It is that you spend time before you understand what time buys. The prologue looks like a tutorial and behaves like a time management exam, so the first skill you need is telling free actions apart from ones that charge you.

Time Is the Real Currency

The clock is not a real-time countdown. Walking, looting, talking to villagers, and crossing the valley cost nothing. What costs you is committing to a quest — the game charges time in segments when you take on work, and it flags the cost beforehand.

So the day-one habit is small and boring: before you tick a quest objective, look at the icons. A clock icon beside an objective means that quest can expire — do it now or accept losing it. Our time segments page breaks down how segments are charged, and time limit explained covers the 30-day frame.

Preview reports suggested a single efficient run sees roughly 80% of the content. That is design intent, not failure: you are meant to choose.

Free versus paid, at a glance

Free: exploring, dialogue, looting, travelling, fighting things you stumble into, climbing towers. Paid: accepting and progressing quests that show a time cost. When in doubt, wander first and commit second.

The Prologue Quest List and Its Notches

Community guides report nine prologue quests, each with a time notch cost. The notch numbers below come from one detailed prologue guide — a single source — so read them as reported values, not confirmed official data.

Prologue questReported notchesWhy it matters
Withering Away2Opening quest. Medicine for Coen's mother at Anca's hut. 600 XP
Like Father, Like Son1First boss fight, teaches unblockable attacks. Unlocks the Charge manual
On the Run2Find Iorgu's pig in town. Best reward: 50 Denarius and 3 sausages
Deep Down1Southwest farm, bog, cave. Beat the Forgotten Guardian for a good early sword
If A Tree Falls In The Forest0Triggered by a fallen tree in the bog
Into the Den1Bear in a cave. Dirty Trick opens it well
Enter Not0The derelict house from the pig hunt. Climb the whitewashed timber on the right, return the doll to the church
Dead Drop0Grave near the village woods, then runes on trees along the path
Bandit's Treasure Map: Laslea Glen1Three bandits and a dog. Rewards the Rebel's Falchion

That guide is honest about its own uncertainty and so are we: it reports one run where the bandit camp was cleared but the treasure map only dropped after reloading and skipping Into the Den, and the bandit map quest pushed time into night once while possibly costing nothing on another attempt. That last notch cost is not stable.

Clear the Zero-Notch Quests First

The arithmetic falls straight out of that table: three of the nine prologue quests are reported at zero notches — If A Tree Falls In The Forest, Enter Not, and Dead Drop. XP, loot, and story for free.

So clear the free work first, then decide which paid quests you want. In that order every notch is a deliberate purchase rather than whatever the quest log surfaced. The prologue's total notch budget is TBC — not officially confirmed yet.

The correct Withering Away recipe

At Anca's hut, the brew that works is Hot Water + Three Spoonfuls of Herbs. The question about how often the medicine is taken does not matter. Afterwards Anca offers a Latin lesson — decline it and save a third notch. Two sources agree on this recipe. Anca's belongings can be taken freely; it does not count as stealing.

One caveat before you brew: the medicine you give Esme is a point of no return, listed on our missables page.

Two Prologue Choices With Permanent Payoffs

When Like Father, Like Son wraps up, take the option to see him later rather than Skip to Mass. Skipping ahead is the instinctive time-saving move and the community guide reporting this sequence recommends against it.

The quest unlocks the Charge skill manual, and it is handed over even if you lose the fight against your father. The duel teaches you that some attacks cannot be blocked; it does not gate the reward. Manuals are the real bottleneck on the advanced trees — see skill manuals. Anca also supplies four Witchcraft manuals in the prologue, including Mercurial Fervour.

Three Systems That Are Not the Same Thing

New players collapse these into one bar. They are separate, and only one gates your skill tree.

SystemTracksHow it moves
InfamyHow the regime sees youCourt activities, clearing camps, beating lieutenants. Never decreases
Blood HungerNightly thirst pressureRises after dark, falls when you feed. At the limit, dialogue options are replaced by forced feeding
CorruptionUnlock threshold for the Vampirism treeRises when you drink blood

Corruption is the one beginners miss. Beside your night blood bar sits a fang meter; fill it with Voracious Bite and each fill raises your Corruption level by one. Voracious Bite is available from your first transformation and cannot be unbound from the ability wheel, so use it.

Hold right mouse for Focus Mode, lock on to an animal, press F. It works outside combat, just slowly. Bigger targets pay better — a deer beats a rat — and Corruption still rises when your blood bar is full, so there is no reason to wait. Blood vials count too.

There are two independent tracks: regular Corruption from animal and human blood, and a separate Vrakhir blood track marked with a skull. All Vampirism perks sit on the regular track, but abilities can sit on either — so an ability pinned to the Vrakhir track will not budge no matter how many deer you drain. Exact thresholds are TBC — not officially confirmed yet. See vampire abilities and skill trees.

Your Opening Skill Checklist

Spend early points on core attack, defence, and stamina so combat does not stall, then grab these:

  • Shapeshift — take it the moment you have your first Corruption point. Sprint, then tap sprint again to become a wolf. It is the fastest movement in the game.
  • Mercurial Fervour — the Witchcraft daytime equivalent. There are no mounts in Dawnwalker, so these two are your only options. Upgraded, both run without draining stamina.
  • Minor Healing Ointment — you start with the recipe: 1 Canteen of Water plus 2 Ribwart Plantain. Ingredients spawn randomly in barrels and crates with no fixed locations. Store spares at a shrine.
  • Hastened Corruption — raises Corruption per feed. Worth taking early for the vampire route.
  • Artery Strike — the Swordmastery execution move.

Two Towers You Should Climb Immediately

Two towers sit within reach of the opening area: the church in Laslea Glen, your home village, and the Briar Sloughs Watchtower south of town. Both are night-only climbs using Shadow Step and Planeshift, and wall-running burns stamina — stamina pool and Shadow Step distance both improve on the trees.

Why this belongs in a beginner guide: climbing towers does not consume a quest time segment. Map coverage is free information, and that makes every later decision cheaper. More sweep targets sit on collectibles, and day vs night covers route planning.

Your First Pilgrimage of Power

On the way to the Briar Sloughs Watchtower, a quest triggers across the river. Climb the rock face, kill a beefy bear, then analyse the runes and the blade to unlock Ravenous Flock for purchase.

Two caveats. It needs two activation charges, and the second requires investing in Forbidden Sigils. And casting it costs 40% of your current health — several spells here are paid for in blood, not mana.

Further south near Mert's Mill, watch the west side of the road for a Will-o'-the-Wisp. Following it ends at a chest holding a Knightly Greatsword.

Mistakes Beginners Actually Make

  • Saving the zero-notch quests for later. Cheapest content in the prologue, easiest to lose to an expiring window.
  • Skipping prologue beats to save time. Skip to Mass looks like the thrifty choice and costs you the tutor conversation. Permanent rewards outrank a saved notch.
  • Not climbing the towers because it feels expensive. It is free. Players who assume otherwise explore blind.
  • Ignoring Voracious Bite. No Corruption means no Vampirism progression.
  • Treating Infamy as something to avoid. It never decreases and drives infamy edicts escalation, so it is a dial to steer, not a penalty to dodge.
