Dawnwalker Ambrus Boss Guide: How to Beat Ambrus
This guide draws on official information from Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco for The Blood of Dawnwalker (released September 3, 2026). Sections marked as unconfirmed reflect details that are not yet officially verified.
Ambrus is the youngest of Brencis's three vassal boyars. He rules northern Vale Sangora and runs the court's human blood supply chain: bled prisoners, escorted transports, leech-preserved stock, fortified cellars. His signature ability is Scarlet Shield and his boss quest is The Gilded Gauntlet, triggered in southern Maragir. He is the recommended first lieutenant.
This duel is not won with your sword. It is won by whether you finished the poison route before you rang the bell.
Unlocking The Gilded Gauntlet
Anger is tracked per lieutenant in the Court menu — check his portrait for progress. You do not need to clear his region: one launch walkthrough reports roughly 75% of his Court Activities trips the threshold.
Then head to southern Maragir, where peasants stand around a crucified victim and scatter on sight. The message nailed to the cross is Ambrus's: a duel to the death, plus a promise to keep killing Maragir's residents until you accept. Stall and more of them die. Community guides report that discovering the challenge costs 1 time segment.
Cannot find his Court Activities? Sync the 11 towers first — they cost no quest time and make nearby activities appear as white question marks. Our collectibles guide lists them; court activities covers anger.
Court Activities and the Blood Cellar Trick
These are the activities one launch walkthrough documents for Ambrus — not necessarily complete.
| Category | Activity | Segments |
|---|---|---|
| Blood Transports | Bloody Business (take the body's note) | 3 |
| Blood Transports | Roadside Surprise (break barrels) | 3 |
| Prisoner Camp | Under Watchful Eyes (overlaps The Firebrand) | 3 |
| Leech Collectors | Bounty of the Mire | 3 |
| Leech Collectors | Wetland Helpers | 3 |
| Leech Collectors | Unsavoury Solutions | 3 |
| Prisoner Transports | Lucky Crossing | 3 |
| Prisoner Transports | Fate's Mercy | 3 |
| Blood Cellars | Seeing Red | 1 |
| Blood Cellars | Uninvited | 1 |
| Blood Cellars | Trouble Brewing (Svartrau) | 1 |
| Dungeons | Judge and Executioner | 3 |
| Dungeons | Evil and Convenience (spare the guard, get a map) | 3 |
| Dungeons | Twists and Turns | 3 |
Only three cost 1 segment, all Blood Cellars; the other eleven cost 3. Save the cellars for last — one activity short of the threshold, a cellar buys that anger at triple efficiency.
The Bittersweet Toast: Poisoning Ambrus
This optional prequel quest is where the fight is actually decided. Ambrus always feeds on one of his own servants before a duel, so poison the servant and the poison rides the blood in. Vera's witchcraft-boosted poison is the key: it bypasses natural Vrahiri poison resistance.
After the cross, Erdene approaches for Iulian Codrin, Ambrus's servant and a former noble. Agree to meet him and the quest opens; refusing is not permanent. Vera dies regardless.
- Travel with Iulian to Vera. Going alone means building your own fire: a wasted segment.
- Vera's house is empty. Check the Witchcraft table and firefly trap; the last clue you inspect costs 1 segment.
- West to the water, to the trap by the tree grave. Focus Mode reveals footprints — following them costs another segment.
- Take the ritual scroll at the altar (1 segment). Critically, three loose pages lie beside it: a gland inside the slime creature blocks the poison's lethal effect. Skip them and Iulian dies.
- Follow the slime north-east to the Pale Ravager. Surfacing far means an unblockable spit — dodge sideways; surfacing close means a swing or slam — back off. Its slow peck can be Perfect Blocked. Loot the Tatzelwurm Gland (1 segment).
- The ritual is daylight-only (Astral Communion), so spend the night elsewhere.
- Tell Iulian the gland can save him and he asks you not to. Save him anyway by slipping it into the pot unseen.
Astral Communion then lights five pillars: the third spawns spectral swordsmen, the fourth calls lightning, the fifth brings blood spirits and a Fallen Witch. The final stage costs 3 segments, and Iulian will beg you to stop, then to kill him. Force him to finish the cup — killing him or leaving fails it.
The poison lasts 48 segments, not seven days
Iulian says you have seven days. You do not. The Gilded Gauntlet grows a timed optional objective lasting exactly 48 time segments — three in-game days. After that, Ambrus notices Iulian's condition and brings a different victim. Because the duel only starts at night, ring the bell at least two segments before sunrise on the third day. Important distinction: missing the window does not permanently fail the duel quest — it only costs the poison.
Ringing the bell costs 2 segments.
The Goblet: Four Dialogue Choices
Ambrus means to drink from Iulian, but your exchanged glance makes him suspicious, so he demands Coen drink first.
| Answer | Result |
|---|---|
| "Letting a peasant drink first? What kind of boyar are you?" | Full poison — best |
| "I don't trust anything you offer." | Full poison — best |
| "I don't drink from humans." | He kills Iulian; partial poison, wears off mid-fight |
| "Gladly! To a juicy slaughter." | Iulian lives, Ambrus poisoned, Coen poisoned too |
Respawnfirst reports a fifth path — draining the goblet yourself — leaves Ambrus at full strength and Coen severely poisoned: the worst outcome. Coen's poisoning is survivable, since the bar stops a little above the last segment of health, but from drinking Iulian directly it persists 10 segments after the duel with no antidote.
How to Beat Ambrus in the Duel
He defends direct sword pressure well, so long combos are a bad trade. The rhythm is bait, Perfect Block, Perfect Riposte — with the right bracers a riposte chains into a claw ability. Keep target lock on, because he Shadowsteps behind Coen constantly. Respawnfirst reports he is completely immune to bite abilities, so no feed finisher.
Three moves matter, and two look almost identical:
| Move | Tell | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Shadowstep aerial slam | Spins as he winds up, vanishes, reappears slashing downward | Dodge backwards |
| Shadowstep uppercut | Leans forward without spinning, then a rising slash | Dodge sideways. Short recovery — best combo window |
| Figure-eight advance | Sword looping around his body as he presses in | Back dodges. If point-blank, one claw hit then dodge sideways |
The spin is the whole read. Spin means back, lean means side. Get that right and most of the fight resolves itself. Fundamentals are in our combat system guide.
The Two Phase Markers
After the first of his two phase markers, he uses Scarlet Shield. A diamond icon appears below the bar and the bar turns grey. While it is up, do not attack him at all — your damage becomes healing for him. Stop, reposition, wait it out. Sources disagree on the exact trigger point, so treat the marker as your cue, not any health percentage.
After the second, he glows blood-red and teleports constantly, striking from every direction. Block and dodge until his normal moveset returns. Respawnfirst reports this is a phantom sequence: each phantom hits once and vanishes, and blocking through six ends it.
Poisoned Ambrus: not attacking is the correct play
Two facts combine into the most counter-intuitive tactic here. Scarlet Shield punishes players who swing without reading his state — it turns your damage into his healing. And a fully poisoned Ambrus bleeds continuously on his own: one launch walkthrough reports you can win with almost no offence, while respawnfirst adds that he periodically doubles over in pain, briefly defenceless. Together they turn a damage race into a survival check. With the poison landed, the winning play is to stop attacking and stay alive.
Recommended level, gear, and damage numbers: TBC — not officially confirmed yet.
Kill Him or Drink Him
When his health runs out you choose: claws, or drink his blood.
Drinking unlocks the Scarlet Shield Vampirism ability, or upgrades it one level if you already got it from a bottle of Ambrus's blood. It also sends Coen to Anachora, the vampire afterlife, for a last conversation with Ambrus's soul, unlocking the Realmwalker achievement on a first visit. There he asks Coen to let him in; accept and a fragment of his soul stays inside Coen, commenting occasionally and helping later against Brencis. One launch walkthrough reports no cost and no ending closed off.
Killing him outright forfeits Scarlet Shield, though community guides report the rare "Ambrus's blood" item still grants it. Respawnfirst also reports loot on the body — the epic sword Song of Valor, the legendary armour Ambrus's Cuirass, and a note pointing to Lacra opening A Kindred Spirit. Single-source: reported, not confirmed.
Either way, you skip him during the final assault on Greifberg Castle, and Infamy rises sharply — matching the one-level-per-lieutenant figure in our infamy and edicts guide.
Ambrus Boss FAQ
